Sankai Juku Schloss Neuschwanstein

Butoh Dance Photographs by Alexandra Paszkowska
The photographer Alexandra Paszkowska observed the Sankai Juku group at performances and during tours in the USA, Scotland, and at historic Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany.

In the course of this fertile collaboration between the dance group and the photo- grapher, which was also an encounter between photography (a static artistic genre) and movement (which exists only for an instant), she created more than 150 energy-laden, bizarre, and aesthe- tically beautiful photographs. In her artistic work, this artist has compressed Japanese history and the outlook towards the new millennium to produce profound, highly concentrated series of images which add another fascinating facet to East Asian forms of art and meditation.
